Any excuse to own an MGB is a good one.

If you can afford to keep it running, go right on ahead.

I just want a car that says MG on the grille. That way I can tell non-car people that I had the car specially made for me

Sure, just make sure you buy two, one to drive (occasionally) and one for spare parts. I had a college roomie that did just that...two 73 MGB's. Whenever he called me I knew it was for a roadside assist/rescue...otherwise he never called.

MGBs are arguably the best classic car you could own and run, especially as a first classic car. The fan base is huge and there is so much support in parts supply that I believe one can build an entirely new MGB from scratch.

minus the frame (or tube chassis would work)

True. You'll either have to source a bare frame or have a new one made.

If you lived in the UK and didn't want to spend so much in maintenance, you could pick up Fs and TFs for low low prices. They might not be as fun or as reliable as an MX-5, but they did outsell the Mazda over there which means they're common and cheap to buy.

I have many fond memories of my friend's (crappy) MGB in high school. It was fun to drive but there was never a time when everything actually worked at once. If you're mechanically inclined and want to do some of your own wrenching, that could be fun.

Fun car in the summer though. And it sounded great.

Ya, I'm not in the UK, but that would be nice. Pre '74 MGBs in Denver are going for about double what type-1 beetles are going for, which is like 7-8k in drivable condition. so, their not too bad

A G-wagen would actually fit your initials better.

I could swear there was a company that was making the unibodies for these again. Might have been a little while ago so I'm not sure if they're still about.

Really? Why? Did her's break down all the time? 'Cause ours never did, it ever gave a moment of mechanical trouble in the two or three years we had it.

Do it.

First rule of British car* buying - Buy the nicest one you can find.

*Non high-dollar collectables like Jaguars, Aston Martins, Austin Healeys, Morgans, Lotus, etc. Cars like MGs, Trumphs, and Minis aren't high-dollar cars, so restoring them yourself will be more expensive than buying someone else's work. Then again, if restoring is what you want to do, then ignore what I said.

Parts for MGs aren't that pricy, really. They put that B-series engine in so many things. Try pricing E-Type parts...

I had a 76 midget for my first car, I spent more time fixing it than driving it but that's just part of the appeal, my suggestion would get a pre-76 for chrome bumpers and before all the emission junk, although you can just remove the emission stuff. All in all there fun cars and you feel very connected, you smell the oil burning, hear the parts falling off, I wouldn't have traded it for anything. Make sure your tetanus shot is up to date.

Based on my experience, you'll have plenty of opportunity to "learn" with an MGB. :-)
